The Orbe River Basin
Hikers will discover the Orbe River Basin’s mythical natural beauty as they start their trek from the town which bears the river’s name, at the foot of the Jura mountain range.
A rich landscape of wild nature awaits hikers along the trails, where they can admire natural pine groves strewn with columbine and oregano, wild thyme, juniper, horsetail, several species of orchids and common butterworts (a semi-carnivorous plant). In the Nature Reserve of Roche du Perce-Neige (commune of Ballaigues) and in the Botanic Reserve (communes of Orbe, Agiey, Montcherand and Les Clées) many trails criss-cross the rich and colourful landscape.
The Orbe River provides refuge and food for a wide variety of fauna, many of which live hidden and are not often sighted - trout, kingfishers, wagtails, grey herons, the occasional herd of chamois, as well as the beaver in the Orbe River gorges.
