Politics & Institutions

Yverdon-les-Bains forms part of the Jura Nord District of the Canton of Vaud, the largest of the ten districts of that Canton.

After Napoleon put an end to the rule of the Canton by the Bernese in 1798, the Canton of Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803.

With regard to its political system, the Canton of Vaud’s executive power is exercised by the State Council. Its seven members, elected by the people, head seven departments. The legislative power rests with the Grand Council, which is composed of 150 members elected according to the proportional representation system. The Canton of Vaud currently has 20 representatives at the federal level (18 at the National Council and 2 at the Council of States).

The Jura Nord district is composed of 83 communes and is the largest of the Canton of Vaud districts, with an area of 702,59 sq kms. It holds 17 seats at the Grand Council, out of a total of 150. The administrative center of the district is Yverdon-les-Bains.
